David M. Gangadeen (b.1999) is a designer and ceramicist currently pursuing an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). His design practice involves typographic and graphic design for print media, and in particular, for museum catalogs and publications. Meanwhile as a ceramicist, he explores themes of permanence, light, and space using thrown and slip-cast vessels.

Inspired by the personal and mundane aspects of his daily life, David seeks to use both these sides of his practice as a means of inspiring others to become more aware of, and thus engaged, with their surrounding environments.

This light fixture features modular diffusers/shades that take the form of wares. The arrangement of the wares in each fixture may be adjusted in different orders - and sometimes orientations - to the user’s liking. This design was inspired by my desire for the ability to modulate the behavior of light from a fixture, in addition to my fascination with the unexpectedly harmonious relationships that exist between the forms of disparate household wares.

Preservation is a series of forms inspired by the ephemerality and fragility of natural life. Each leaf is formed as a trace left behind in the clay as it burned out in the kiln. In this way, their figures are preserved in the stoneware. However, left unglazed, each stone leaf remains fragile and prone to breakage and destruction. Thus, these pieces reflect the futility of preservation, and are intended to break and “decay” over time.

In Perpetuity (Cessation) is an expansion on my previous series, Preservation. In this body of work, I focus on similar themes of preserving the ephemeral. However, in this case, the movement of the leaves are captured in clay and encased in layers of glaze. Thus the name, In Perpetuity refers to both the perpetual motion that the leaves are left in, and the perpetual cessation of their movements upon being fired.

Hydrological Humanities is a journal I created to help paint a picture of an imagined future where our access to, and the availability of potable water have become scarce. In its imagined context, Hydrological Humanities is a valuable and reliable resource for those looking to keep on top of the latest news, information, and studies regarding the state of fresh water resources throughout the "International Alliance".
