Mauricio López F.
My practice relies on the transformative potential of sound by selecting and modifying it to create meaningful experiences. Building on my music background, I have evolved into a broader engagement with sound, often drawing from my South American roots and incorporating sardonicism that navigates the absurd.
Currently, I explore various mediums in sonic arts, including sound sculptures, installations, graphic scores, and performances with non-traditional instruments. By combining sound with visual and kinetic elements, I challenge the listening situation, providing a more complex sensory experience that leads to an intricate set of codes and significations. These works address themes of translation, communication misunderstandings, labor, and migration. They are deeply connected to the physical and social spaces I inhabit, revealing latent political and cultural content.
These pieces have been presented in Chile, Peru, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and the United States. I am currently pursuing an MFA in Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, supported by the New Artist Society Scholarship and the Chile Crea Scholarship.
