Sonny Schinderle

Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling

Sonny Schinderle (They/Them) (b. 2000) is a non-binary, trans, queer multimedia artist from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They graduated from DePaul University in May of 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Studio Art. Later that year, they began their graduate studies pursuing a Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). As an artist and emerging art therapist they strive to use art as a form of play, self expression, and to better understand the self as it interacts with the world. Their artwork explores themes of the self as it connects to their trans, non-binary, and lesbian identities alongside external and internal experiences, grief, joy, and community. They accomplish this through the use of different materials and media such as soft sculpture, comics, painting, and drawing. Experimenting with unconventional materials allows them to lean into playfulness while creating, which has informed their practice as an artist and future art therapist.
