Gabriele Irle

Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Fiber and Material Studies

Gabriele Irle is a multi-disciplinary artist from Munich, Germany. Her work is about maternity. However, she is not only dealing with her own ambivalent physical and emotional experience of giving birth. She is also asking about the relationship between birthing bodies and artmaking, and between birthing bodies and systems of power. Gabriele works with a wide variety of materials and techniques, but photography is always at the heart of her work; she engages critically with it, even when no photographs are visible.
Gabriele earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Siegen, Germany, and she holds a MFA in Art Therapy from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. She is a graduate candidate in the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and will graduate this upcoming May.
