Leena Mahaal

Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Art and Technology Studies

Leena Mahaal is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, pursuing an MFA in Art and Technology at SAIC. She completed her Bachelor’s in Electronics from Calcutta University and a Diploma in Animation. She began her artistic journey in Kolkata with her solo debut, “Stories So Far”, followed by several group exhibitions and live comic paintings at the Kolkata International Book Fair. She also exhibited her work “Ghosts of Reality” in the Ars Electronica Festival 2024 as a student of SAIC.

Currently, Leena’s practice includes paintings, kinetic structures, hybrid materials and interactive installation. She has always questioned self-consciousness, origins, and reasons of crisis; be it generational, political, geographical or personal. Her practice is evolving towards hybridisation in materials, thoughts, concepts, and questions. She experiments with cultural metaphors and ethnic crisis, blending traditional visual media with technological components, which ultimately form hybrid, fluid cultural structures that connect ancient narratives with modernity.
