Lisa J. Croner

Lisa J. Croner is a California-based artist who considers apparent randomness to be probable signal from a hidden world – structures, processes, and relations beyond immediate perception. She creates art probing our interactions with nature, as well as how perception and cognition shape our encounter with the unknown world around us. Her practice sets natural processes in motion, such as carbon powders moving in fluid, to draw hidden structures into the work. Recent interactive assemblages built from hinged translucent boxes bring similar attention to objects from the human-built world.

Her art is driven by curiosity about how human nature shapes our place in the world, a curiosity that also led to a career in biological research studying primate vision and working in data science. She holds a BA in Art and Biology from UC Santa Cruz and a PhD in Biophysics from Rockefeller University.
