Matias Brimmer was born in San Francisco, CA and raised in East Lansing, MI. Discovering painting at the end of high school, Matias has maintained an active studio practice since the mid 2010s. In 2021 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Michigan State University and in 2024 he began his MFA study in painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Matias’ work uses the male body as a vehicle to discuss violence, eroticism and vulnerability. Anxiety over the celebration and abuse of power suffuse Brimmer’s work which draws influence from art historical movements like Romanticism and German expressionism as well as pornography, cartoons, and comics.
