Rowan Davis is a queer, interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Chicago, Illinois. Originally from Michigan and inspired by her family of artists and musicians, her work spans mediums including film, textiles, and puppetry. Her art practice is grounded in the principles of craft and auto-ethnographic storytelling. To build upon these foundations Davis utilizes traditional techniques that have historically been considered “women’s work,” such as hand sewing, embroidery, and quilting. The reclamation of these forms allows her to explore broad themes of girl and womanhood, as well as her own experiences as a girl living in the 21st century. Within these themes she enjoys investigating the aesthetics of “cuteness” and femininity to bring her work to life. Through her work Davis looks to legitimize imagery and experiences often dismissed for being “juvenile.”
