Aazeen Haqui is a South Asian- American Muslim art therapist who has studied art therapy at Millikin University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A multidiciplinary artust, Haqui has a fondness for various medias including watercolor, digital illustration, printmaking, and crochet. As an art therapist, Haqui pulls from her own experiences as a multicultural immigrant to foster safety and belonging for clients. Haqui is also interested in exploring religion and spirituality in the therapeutic space.
Identity, space, and belonging have been topics I have found myself exploring and re-exploring throughout my life. More recently it has become relevent again. I step out of my comfort-zone of small watercolor illustrations for my latest project, a crochet ball-jointed doll fashioned in my own image; a sculptural self portrait. The making of the doll was done in multiple spaces; in class, at home, on transit, at work, with friends, and even in my own therapy. The reactions of those around me to the doll either foster a sense of safety and belonging or build my internal protective walls.
